Downtown Duluth

Like many other cities of comparable size, Duluth has gone to great lengths to make its downtown area an interesting area to live and work. Much progress has been made by the Greater Downtown Council - a nonprofit corporation whose aim is to promote the downtown area.

First time visitors to Duluth are often impressed by the city's topography. Many streets - notably Lake Avenue - rise 800 feet from the shores of Lake Superior. The higher parts of downtown contain many beautiful and ornate Victorian mansions built when the city's wealthy intended that Duluth would rival Chicago.

Downtown contains most of the usual civic buildings - library, courthouse and various government offices. Downtown also contains some of the area's biggest attractions - the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, Aquarium and even a casino. The popular Canal Park area with its warehouses converted into shops and restaurants is a few minutes walk from downtown.

One of the distinctive features of downtown Duluth is the skywalk system. The skywalk is a network of enclosed walkways which connect most of the major downtown buildings as well as the Entertainment and Convention Center. In a city where winter temperatures can plummet to -29 degrees, it's much appreciated.

A memorable way to see Downtown is on the Duluth trolley. The trolley takes visitors from the old Union Depot station, through the warehouse district and finishes up at the Fitger brewery. And if you're a little bit hungry after all that sightseeing - lunch is included.
