Great Lakes Floating Maritime MuseumThe Great Lakes Floating Maritime Museum is located along Lake Superior in Duluth. The floating museum is the home to two historic ships which are open for tours. The museum is located at 301 Harbor Drive near Canal Park.Visitors can come aboard the S.S. William A. Irvin which was the flagship of U.S. Steel's Great Lakes Fleet. The ship carried iron ore and coal to ports in the Great Lakes. It also offered elegant accommodations to those who traveled on her. The elegance has been preserved and visitors can see the beautiful fixtures that still remain. The second ship that is open for tours is the Coast Guard Vessel Sundew. Built in 1944, the Sundew's main responsibility was to break up the ice on the lakes, making passageway safe for other ships. It also served as a search and rescue ship that saved many crew members of other damaged ships. On board both ships, visitors will be treated to stories of the two great vessels by knowledgeable tour guides. The museum takes pride in passing along the stories of the ships and their officers and crew members to preserve the rich history of maritime life along the Great Lakes. In October, the S.S. William A. Irvin hosts a haunted tour known as the "Ship of Ghouls." Each fall the ship is transformed into a floating haunted ship complete with professional actors and elaborate special effects. |
