Grandma's MarathonNo, Grandma's Marathon is not a bunch of grandmas racing for a prize to give their grandchildren-although grandmothers can certainly participate-but rather a famous, world-class 26.2-mile race held in Duluth, Minnesota every year in late spring, named for the first race's sponsor, Grandma's Restaurant, in 1977.The road race begins at Two Harbors on Old Highway 61, and moves point-to-point along the beautiful, scenic, and vast Lake Superior to Duluth, in Duluth's famous Canal Park at Grandma's Restaurant. Interested participants must register through the Grandma's Marathon official website at www.grandmasmarathon.com. Participation is limited to 9,500 runners, and each participant must pay a $75.00 USD entry fee that is non-returnable. However, Grandma's Marathon is so much more than "just" a race. It is actually part of an entire weekend of fun and festivities for the whole family, which includes other races (such as a half marathon and a free race for children), live entertainment, various activities, and scrumptious food. Spectators and volunteers are a large part of the Grandma's Marathon experience, and many visitors decide to partake in the weekend and cheer on the runners, whether on the sidelines along the course or near the finish line at Canal Park. For the best in Duluth's hospitality, community spirit, scenery, and entertainment, make Grandma's Marathon a part of your plans as either a participant or a spectator.
