Lake Superior BoatingBoating on Lake Superior usually means fishing. There are dozens of charter fishing captains and companies to take you out on the lake and help you land a whopping walleye, large lake trout and sizable salmon. You will need a Minnesota fishing license, available from your charter captain or any number of shops around the water front. If fishing isn't your thing, there's a great boat festival that comes to Lake Superior each August. The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is sponsored by the Superior Rotary Club and Duluth's Harbortown Rotary Club. While the race is technically in Wisconsin, it is just across Superior Bay from Duluth. This is a wonderful activity for families and single adults alike. There's plenty of entertainment, activities and food vendors for spectators enjoyment. Evening boating offers a great new view of Lake Superior. There are more than fifty lighthouses that keep Lake Superior boaters safe along the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan water fronts. While out on the water, especially if you've rented a houseboat and have a few days of floating, consider heading to the Apostle Islands. Not only are the Islands picturesque, they are full of other, off-boat activities. Consider scuba diving off the shore, hunting deer on the island or practicing your paddling skills. There are plenty of outfitters for all activities on the island, close to the shore. Boat rentals are plentiful near the neighborhood of Two Harbors. Unless you are an experienced ship captain, consider taking a lesson or two before stepping onboard. |
