Lake Superior SailingThe best sailing on Lake Superior is undoubtedly at the Apostle Islands. With dozens of sail instructors and sailboat rental companies, there's no shortage of ways and places to learn how to sail or hone your skills.While sailing a boat on Lake Superior and through the Apostle Islands, you might consider stopping by Stockton Island - home to a rock quarry and a black bear population, Basswood and Sand Islands - where a number of endangered Bald Eagles call home, or Raspberry Island to see and tour a restored lighthouse. There are sheer cliffs with thousand-year old hieroglyphics for viewing and amazing views of Canada and the US. More than fifty lighthouses dot the coastline, most located near a dock, so you can take a break from the sailing for a quick walk. Each August brings the Trans Superior Sailing Race to the waters. Yachts start at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and sail their way to Duluth, Minnesota. Two divisions are available for those interested in taking part in the race - singlehanded and crewed. First time racers are always welcome. When looking for a sailing instructor on Lake Superior, make sure you communicate your goals and that the instructor understands them. Ask to see his or her USCG license and instructor certification. If you have more than a day or two, ask for a few 1-hour classes followed by an hour or two of captaining the vessel. Another option for Lake Superior sailing is to contact the Duluth Community Sailing Association and ask if they have any upcoming sailing lessons or events. A few times a year they host sailing lessons in cooperation with the University of Minnesota. |
