St. Louis County Real EstateSt. Louis County in the State of Minnesota has a population of just over 200,000 people. The county seat is Duluth, Minnesota. St. Louis County is the largest county in Minnesota by area calculations and the largest in the United States laying east of the Mississippi river with water included. St. Louis County is 6,860 miles squared in total area (17,767 kilometers square). Of that area, 635 miles square is water, equaling 9.35 per cent of the total area and 6,225 miles square is land mass. Pulpwood production is the major industry in St. Louis County, followed by tourism. Surface mining of low-grade iron-ore was at one time a major industry in St. Louis County and a big part of the area's economy. Bois Forte Indian reservation and the Fond du Lac Indian reservation share part of their land within St. Louis County borders.When St. Louis County was founded on Feb. 20, 1855 it was named Doty County. A few weeks later, Doty County was renamed Newton County. A year minus two days later on March 1, 1856, the St. Louis County which laid to the east became Lake County and Newton County took on the St. Louis County title. The geographic area of St. Louis County changed a few times over the next year until it took up it's current geographic shape on May 23, 1857. Two major Interstate highways run through St. Louis County-Interstate 35 and Interstate 535. U.S. Highways 2, 53 and 169 also run through the area. There are 10 Minnesota State Highways running through St. Louis County as well-Minnesota State Highways numbers 1, 23, 33, 37, 61, 73, 135, 169, 194, and 210. St. Louis County shares its borders with five other counties in Minnesota and two other counties from other areas. Lake County lies to the east, Carlton County to the south, Aitkin County to the southwest, Itasca County to the west, and Koochiching County to the west. Rainy River District in Ontario, Canada lies to the north and Douglas County in Wisconsin lies to the south east. Within St. Louis County borders are 27 cities. The county seat is Duluth, Minnesota. Other cities in the county include: Aurora, Babbit, Biwabik, Brookston, Buhl, Chisholm, Cook, Arnold (CDP), Ely, Eveleth, Floodwood, Gilbert, Hermantown, Hibbing, Hoyt Lakes, Iron Junction, Kinney, Leonidas, McKinley, Meadowlands, Mountain Iron, Orr, Proctor, Tower, Virginia, and Winton. Within the borders of St. Louis County there are also many townships-too many to name here. St. Louis County is a broad spectrum county in the heart of Minnesota-large by area, St. Louis County and all the wonderful cities and townships within its borders are wonderful places to live and raise a family, go to work and call home. |
