Duluth SkiingDuluth prides itself as having some of the best cross-country skiing trails in the nation. The city of Duluth maintains five ski trails and a privately owned and operated Spirit Mountain Center opens 40 miles of cross country trails for skiers of all levels each winter.Chester Bowl is not only for leisurely afternoons in the winter wonderland but is also suitable for race conditioning. While the trail loop is less than two miles in all, the terrain is varied. Skiers must possess a Great Minnesota Ski Pass, available at area recreation centers. Hartley Trail is just over 3 miles long with two main loops. The outer trail is more challenging, meant for experienced skiers. The inside loop is great for families or those who desire a much more relaxing ski adventure. The Hartley Trail needs at least a foot of snow pack for quality skiing. Skiers must possess a Great Minnesota Ski Pass, available at area recreation centers. Looking for a longer trail? The Lester-Amity trail covers 15 kilometers (just under 10 miles) of tree lined terrain and offers additional access, in the form of a 1.5 mile loop, to Lester Park Golf Course. Experienced skiers will enjoy the trail beyond point C. Beginners and those learning to cross-country will find the golf course a perfect place to get started. Skiers must possess a Great Minnesota Ski Pass, available at area recreation centers. Spirit Mountain is a privately owned and operated ski resort area that is open to the public for cross-country and downhill skiing during winter and summer camping. Skiing lessons are offered for all levels and ages, from toddlers to ski masters that live at the terrain park. |
